“Leaning Tower of Pizza”, BigGAN steered by CLIP using Big SleepI wrote earlier about DALL-E [https://www.aiweirdness.com/the-drawings-of-dall-e/], an image generating algorithm recently developed by OpenAI. One part of DALL-E [https://openai.com/blog/dall-e/]’s success is another algorithm called CLIP [https://openai.com/blog/clip/], which

I’m previewing OpenAI’s new API, [https://beta.openai.com/] and like GPT-2, it looked at a lot of internet text during training. In my last post [https://aiweirdness.com/post/620645957819875328/this-is-the-openai-api-it-makes-spookily-good] I showed how it can adapt to different prompts in part because of how much it’

ucresearch [http://ucresearch.tumblr.com/post/127567457311]: How Dust Is Holding Science Back > To most of us dust is just something we clean off our furniture, but to scientists dust can cause big problems in the lab. Computer chips are put together and tested in what are called clean

Nanolasers with googly eyes!  Because grad students. These are microscopic lasers, shown in various stages of completion. The innermost layer, looking like a slim grey column, is the semiconductor core, which actually does the light-amplifying.  Next comes a layer of glass that coats the entire laser (the white puffy-looking laser)

Smiley face lasers!  Now decorating our office door. Left half: Top view showing the light distribution in the lasers - these are whispering gallery modes [http://tmblr.co/ZP7VLs1AcrIut], where the light bounces around the laser’s perimeter. Right half: Diagram of the lasers (red), their glassy coatings (greenish), and

Nanozombies!  These people-shaped nanopillars were formed by accident while I was etching away laser material to make the long wall at the left of the picture.  They creeped me out a little until someone pointed out to me in my last picture [http://tmblr.co/ZP7VLssWK9yZ] that they look like

Dramatic patterns of light and dark chase each other across the landscape.  Jagged monoliths reach for the sky, while canyons, mesas, and mountains range on toward the horizon. The mountains are made of solid laser material, and the plains are made of solid glass.  And it’s all microscopic, the
